On Friday, I met with Cooper and his family in an East Bay coffee shop to find out how he became interested in arguably the most thankless job on the diamond. Dressed in a perfect replica of an MLB umpire’s uniform - down to the ball-strike counter and the ball bag - Cooper entertained us for much of the game as he called balls and strikes in tandem with home plate umpire Lance Barrett. I came across Cooper on Wednesday at the Oakland Coliseum when I was taking in the A’s-Guardians game with my two sons. On HBO, WE OWN THIS CITY ticked down to 0.03, and GENTLEMAN JACK was steady at 0.01/116K. FX’s BREEDERS returned at 0.04 & 0.01/70K, down from 0.13/0.08 for the 2021 premiere episodes. On ID, MURDER IN THE HEARTLAND held at 0.10. In his dreams, the cap he’s wearing isn’t the Dodger blue of his favorite MLB team, but rather the dark black and light blue of the official MLB umpire uniform. VH1’s BLACK INK CREW was at 0.12/0.06 compared to last week’s 0.10/0.05. Like many 9-year-olds, Cooper Santos dreams of one day stepping onto a major-league field.
